Extending Mercy Behind Bars
In the compassionate spirit of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the ISKCON Prison Ministry (IPM) serves as a sacred channel through which the holy names, the teachings of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and the mercy of His pure devotees are made accessible to those confined within the prison system. This initiative is not merely a program of outreach — it is an expression of Kṛṣṇa's causeless mercy toward those who, despite their circumstances, are seeking truth, purpose, and liberation.
The Sacred Mission
Sharing the life-transforming process of bhakti-yoga with those who find themselves incarcerated — following in the bold footsteps of Śrīla Prabhupāda's compassionate vision.
Philosophical Foundation
Rooted in the conviction that only Kṛṣṇa consciousness brings true and lasting reform. Through sādhana-bhakti, devotees behind bars reawaken their original spiritual identity.
Service in Action
Volunteers lovingly cultivate spiritual relationships with inmates through correspondence, book distribution, devotional items, prison visits, and post-release community support.
Mercy Knows No Boundaries
The mission of the ISKCON Prison Ministry is to share the life-transforming process of bhakti-yoga with those who find themselves incarcerated. In truth, as Śrīla Prabhupāda has often reminded us, this material world itself is a kind of prison house for the conditioned soul. Yet, even within the physical confines of a correctional facility, a person can awaken their original God-consciousness and embark on the path back to Godhead.
"The means which I have adopted are spiritual, and they work quicker than any material means. If you give me a chance to speak to all the members in jail, it is quite possible for me to turn them into ideal characters."Śrīla Prabhupāda Letter, 1962 — Speaking on his vision for preaching in Tihar Jail, India
"Always chanting My glories, endeavouring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion."
This verse anchors the ministry's conviction that the practice of chanting and devotional service is available to every soul in every circumstance — including within prison walls.
The Power of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
IPM is grounded in the firm conviction that only the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness can bring about true and lasting reform — both for individuals and for society as a whole.
By encouraging the regulated practice of sādhana-bhakti — including the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, abstinence from harmful activities, and daily reading of Śrīla Prabhupāda's books — devotees behind bars gradually reawaken their spiritual identity.
Through Kṛṣṇa's mercy, even one who has committed grave errors can become spiritually enlightened and socially uplifted. The prison thus becomes not a place of despair, but a sacred space for inner transformation.

The chanting of the holy names is the prescribed process for this age — available to every soul, in every circumstance, without exception.

Guiding Principles
Those who serve within the ISKCON Prison Ministry are encouraged to embody the very qualities taught by Lord Caitanya — humility, tolerance, compassion, and spiritual determination.
Volunteers embody the qualities of humility, tolerance, compassion, and spiritual determination — following in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya's teachings. Relationships are grounded strictly in devotional intent, with the sole aim of uplifting the soul and bringing one closer to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
All communication is clear, respectful, and consistent — always presenting the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda without compromise, while avoiding sectarian debate or theological contention.
The ministry is deeply committed to not abandoning sincere seekers — especially those who, upon their release, wish to continue their spiritual journey within the ISKCON community.
As emphasised in Holy Jail — one of the publications arising from this ministry — the lives of inmates who take to chanting and devotional service are visibly transformed. These stories offer hope to all conditioned souls yearning for spiritual freedom.
A Service of Heartfelt Dedication
This ministry stands as a tribute to the enduring compassion of Śrīla Prabhupāda, who preached in India's Tihar jail in the early 1960s. That same bold spirit now continues through the commitment of countless devotees who serve the incarcerated with great love and responsibility.
They do so not as social workers, but as servants of Lord Caitanya's mission — offering every soul the chance to chant, read, and live a spiritual life, even behind bars.
The ISKCON Prison Ministry invites all leaders and communities to recognise the urgency and sanctity of this service. With consistent support and guided expansion, this ministry can continue to transform lives and demonstrate, once again, that Kṛṣṇa's mercy knows no bounds.
