Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura Disappearance - ISKCON Congregational Development Ministry

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura Disappearance

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s disappeared from this mortal world in 1914. In a few days this occasion will be celebrated and it is important to remember and glorify him as one of the greatest personalities in the line of saintly spiritual masters who re-established Krsna Consciousness on the planet. Srila Prabhupada said “we have to continue Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s work” in regards to his congregational plans for expanding the Hare Krsna movement.

There are three main achievements that are recognized as his greatest contributions to the Sankirtan movement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. First is the vast number of books and songs that he produced explaining the philosophy of love and devotion for Lord Krsna. Secondly, the finding of the authentic birth place of Sri Caitanya in Mayapur and personally constructing the temple of Yoga Pitha honoring the sacred landmark. And lastly is the legacy that he left in the form of the practical methods for preaching and expanding the Market of the Holy Name (Nama Hatta).

He longed for the day when devotees from the whole world will unite in Mayapur and chant together the names of “Gaura Hari”. This prophesy has been fulfilled by Srila Prabhupada through his International Society for Krsna Consciousness, ISKCON. The Congregational Development Ministry takes Srila Bhaktivinoda’s direct instructions of spreading the Hare Krsna movement by small groups in the form of branches called “Bhakti Vrikshas” in the cities, Nama Hatta groups in rural areas and many other ways of outreaching and cultivating new devotees through small groups. We honor his commitment to entrust everyone to push forward the dissemination of Krsna Bhakti everywhere.

On this special day we offer our heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful legacy that he left for us to continue under the expert guidance of Srila Prabhupada. On June 23, 1914 just before noon at Jagannatha Puri, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura left his body. On the Gaudiya calendar this day was also the disappearance day of Sri Gadadhara Pandita. His bodily remains were taken from Orissa back to his beloved Godruma, amidst sankirtana, the congregational chanting of the Lord’s holy names, his remains were placed in Samadhi in Nadia, the land of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His eternal pastimes. His headquarters and Samadhi are across the Jalangi from ISKCON Mayapur in the island of Godrumadvipa.
